Carousel Cakes owners Howy Lefkowitz, David & Nancy Finkelstein
Carousel Cakes is a family business. Second generation owners Nancy & David Finkelstein and Nancy’s brother Howy Lefkowitz are following their father Martin Lefkowitz’s example. Martin taught them that the most important part of a good product was the combination of natural and fresh ingredients mixed by hand, with love. Nancy & Howy began in the bakery business as teenagers helping their father sell cakes retail to customers.
Today Carousel cakes sells about 20 different varieties of cakes. Their Red Velvet Cake, was chosen by Oprah Winfrey’s “O” list of Oprah’s favorite things in her magazine’s February 2007 issue. In addition Carousel cakes sells Chocolate Cake, Cheesecake, Mousse Cake, White Delights, Pink Ribbon Cakes and an extraordinary line of fruit pies and other fine desserts.
After selling 7″ and 10″ cakes wholesale for almost 30 years to restaurants, private social clubs and corporate dining halls, the owners decided it was time to branch out from the family bakers business founded by their father in 1965. Soon they will open a cupcake shop in Ridgewood, New Jersey. To be called Cupcakes by Carousel, the cupcake store will sell mini-versions of their creations. In addition to cupcakes, the shop will sell other fine Carousel cake items, such as the napoleon similar to the Italian pastry, banana-wafer pudding, brownies and blondies (vanilla brownies), lemon and rasberry squares and kosher-style Passover cakes.
